What is InfoPath Designer
Microsoft InfoPath is one of the popular application for creating and filling electronic forms. Users can easily and quickly add various useful controls like textboxes, buttons, drop-down list, radio button to create forms.
InfoPath was introduced in 2003 and is a part of Microsoft Office 2003. Got very much popular in InfoPath 2010 and InfoPath 2013 (ms infopath 2013) versions.
But in Jan 2014, Microsoft announced that InfoPath 2013 will be the last version and will be replaced by a new tool (Maybe PowerApps). But Microsoft still offers support for InfoPath and it will continue to support it until April 2023.
InfoPath is one of the popular tools to design forms in SharePoint 2013/2016 or SharePoint Online. By using InfoPath you can easily design and publish forms to SharePoint Online, SharePoint 2013, or SharePoint 2016. Easily you can create an input form using InfoPath, where you can apply validations, rules, you can retrieve data from other data sources, etc.
You can create different views by using InfoPath for a SharePoint Online or SharePoint 2013 list, And based on condition, you can show or hide views in the InfoPath form.
Microsoft has already announced that there will be no further versions of InfoPath in Office 2016, So InfoPath 2013 is the latest version of InfoPath. But the good news is that InfoPath 2013 is supported in SharePoint 2016 as well as SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint online also.
So you can design a form using InfoPath 2013 and can publish to SharePoint 2013/2016 or SharePoint Online.

Microsoft announced on Jan 31, 2014 that InfoPath has been discontinued.
But InfoPath 2013 applications will be supported till July 2026.
So if you are thinking how long will InfoPath be supported? Then it will be supported till July 2026 but Microsoft will not release any new features in InfoPath 2013.
So InfoPath is deprecated and we should check other alternatives for forms development or customization.
What is the replacement for InfoPath?
While I was doing some SharePoint migration consulting services, I often got this question, What is the replacement for InfoPath? Can PowerApps replaces InfoPath?
Well yes and no also. PowerApps supports a lot of things that InfoPath supports but still there are a few things that are not directly supported in PowerApps.
But you can think of PowerApps is the replacement for InfoPath based on your functionality. Microsoft PowerApps is not meant for SharePoint only, you can connect to various other services, easily create and manage mobile or tablet layout apps without much developer knowledge.
If you want to customize your SharePoint Online list forms, then you should start using Microsoft PowerApps rather than InfoPath now. PowerApps is much more powerful than InfoPath with lots of features and support for other cloud services.
Note: If you have a plan to migrate your InfoPath forms to PowerApps, then there is no direct migration approach supported. You have to understand the logic and develop the forms using Microsoft PowerApps.
